George Rochberg: Caprice Variations
George Rochberg establishes and deconstructs a carefully built tapestry of variations around the canvas provided by the harmonies of Paganini’s 24th caprice, unfolding like a chronicle of dramatic and organic proportions. The choice of this caprice isn’t inconsequential, since it has attained something of a cult status among composers (Rachmaninoff, Eugène Ysaÿe, Manuel Quiroga, Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt, Witold Lutoslawski have been, as it were, inspired or entranced by it).
Whatever the culture of the listener might be, there’s something, when listening to Rochberg’s Variations, akin to a projection into the multitude of the universe, whether that might be classical, romantic, contemporary, with an immediate, unrestrained aura. By listening to it – and even more when performing it – one may weave into the Variations an odyssey of feelings, open to memory, surprises, giving hommage to music of the past whilst calling that of the future, through the extraordinary number and facets of their styles and references. In his own creative life, George Rochberg has reached and developed upon a wide array of musical styles, from abstraction to neo-romanticism. An unconditional believer in serial techniques in the 1950s, which brought him to the furthest results of twelve-tone thinking in terms of harmony and form, a major intimate tragedy makes him realize the futility of his work and research : the passing of his 17-year old son Paul, in 1964, plunges him to the depths of a six-year long depressive and
introspective state. He would only leave the latter by finding for himself a new mission in music : to reinstate a new order in music, introducing new divisions and concepts of the art of composition, such as « Space-Time » and « Time-form ».
